Promotion of the ICAA Monograph Series Nr. 2
THE COMPLEX OF TUMULI 9, 10 and 11 in the NECROPOLIS of APOLLONIA (ALBANIA) by Maria Grazia Amore
On April 20, 2010 in the hall “Aleks Buda” of the Academy of Sciences was held the promotion of the new publication of the ICAA Monograph Series
Changes were brought to the “Cultural Heritage Law”
Recently some important changes were brought to the “Cultural Heritage Law” approved in 2003.
One of the major successes of the whole activity of ICAA has been the development of the partially excavated Tumulus of Kamenica into an open air museum and Cultural Heritage site. The Tumulus of Kamenica has exceptional and unique characteristics, such as the circular monumental graves and the double ring of the central grave, which make of it an uncommon case of a tumulus that still preserve stone structures after being excavated.
Its location not far from the town of Korça and its position close to the national road Gjirokastra-Korça have made it possible to easily reach this monument.
The visitors of the Cultural Heritage site can not only admire the structures mentioned above and the intact part of the tumulus which has not been excavated, but can also learn in the site museum about the phenomenon of the tumuli in Albania and the history of the excavations at Kamenica, including the most important results both archaeological and anthropological. They can closely observe and even touch copies of the most significant finds, such as ceramic vessels and metal jewellery.
A unique so far in Albania and important component of the Cultural Heritage site of Kamenica is the experimental archaeology program for students of every age, from primary school to university. Thanks to this program children can learn the fundamentals of excavation technique and documentation, and can actually excavate themselves the reproduction of two types of graves typical of the tumulus.
Another success of the Site is the fact that it has become a cultural centre and a point of contact for the wider public, where it is possible to assist to seminars on various archaeological topics and to different cultural initiatives such as classical music concerts and exhibitions.
